Launched in 2019, the Mascom Batanani Walk aims to drive positive societal change through community engagement and support for various causes. “Batanani,” an iKalanga word meaning “Unite,” embodies the spirit of unity and collective action for positive change. The walk, which features 15km, 10km, and 5km categories, has become one of Botswana’s most anticipated charity events.
Since its inception, the Mascom Batanani Walk has donated proceeds towards addressing and sensitizing the nation on numerous issues, such as Gender Based Violence, Mental Health, Drugs and Substance Mis-use, Protection of Our Children and improvement of Education for the Deaf. Every year, we identify a course to assist in and positively impact the lives of Batswana. Mascom Batanani Walk is more than just a gathering of individuals, it is more than just a physical activity, it is a demonstration of our collective strength and a determination to walk for change. Mascom recognises the growing importance of digital literacy and the importance of equipping everyone and our young learners with skills to navigate the internet safely.
This year, we have once again identified a pressing societal need and ghat is ‘Cyber security’. The increasing digitzation of our lives hsa also exposed us to security threats such as cyber bullying, identity theft and fraud, to mention some. We have therefore, partnered with CyberSmart Botswana, our beneficiary of this year’s proceeds, towards a programme that will benefit Batswana and people across the country, targeted especially to school going children. It aims to ensure that the Mascom Batanani Walk helps to educate, support, and empower young people by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed choices. Through collaboration and innovative strategies, we can pave the way for a brighter future for our nation and especially our young people, as they grow with technology and learn to navigate the digital world safety.
